This Person Does Not Exist

CloudQuant Thoughts… We have covered the Nvidia GAN that generates random imaginary celebrities many times in the past. This new website “This Person Does Not Exist” helped to propel this new technology into the public’s view this week. It is a neat site that generates a new random person every time you visit, in fact, this image link is linked to their page so if you refresh our blog post you will get another imaginary person (Caution, it can make some pretty horrid looking mistakes!). Research like this helps to ram home the huge strides that ML has made in the last 12 months. We now have researchers at using ML to help make decisions in real time trading systems. If you are interested in generating your own unique faces check out this StyleGAN on Github. I considered linking to This Cat Is Not Real as well but it needs a little more training as it can produce some pretty horrific results!

Wolf Wolf!! Recession is coming – but can AI help?

How can we get intelligent with the data around us and spot recessions? An analysis of Consumer data should provide us with a view on consumer behaviour, and almost predict where inflation would be heading. One of the firms I recently met, used open banking to collect consumers data, enrich it, and help them manage their finances. But the intelligence they gather from millions of transaction level data are used by their institutional clients to understand customer sentiments towards a brand. Those insights combined with macro economic data should give these institutions the intelligence to choose their investments. The applications of open banking have largely been focused around selling services to customers in a personalized fashion. However, open banking data should help us understand where the economy is heading too. 2019-03-01 00:00:00 Read the full story. This is truly using alternative data to make trading decisions. Lets say you had all the Visa transactions for a large bank for a year. You can see if the flow of money into GAP is increasing or decreasing allowing you to make a play on their earnings announcement with significantly more confidence than anyone else. Even without access to this kind of data you can still make smart trading decisions using freely available data. Consider the GAP/OLD NAVY breakup : Which company is likely to perform better? Well you can do a Google Trends comparison, they will not give you the actual search data but you can compare one company with another…

Microsoft’s Wildbook AI Initiative

Wildbook blends structured wildlife research with artificial intelligence, citizen science, and computer vision to speed population analysis and develop new insights to help fight extinction. According to a July 2017 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a “sixth mass extinction” is underway, a trend signalled by widespread vertebrate losses that “will have negative cascading consequences on ecosystem functioning and services vital to sustaining civilization.” This meta-study is based on multiple, independent analyses and represents a growing awareness in the wildlife research community that more rapid assessment, response, and review are needed to understand and counter this decline. Wildbook evolved out of multi-disciplinary, collaborative research conducted under National Science Foundation support (see Wildbook employees computer vision and A.I. components to detect features in submitted images and detect and then identify individual animals. Wildbook brings massive-scale computer vision to wildlife research for the first time. CloudQuant Thoughts… It is always wonderful to see how ML and AI can step in to solve a seemingly intractable problem. In this case Microsoft, as part of their AI for Earth project, are using all kinds of photographs, both personal and professional, together with their geo-location data to identify individual creatures and their movements. Using AI to identify a specific Giraffe from its spots automatically or a Killer Whale from its Dorsal Fin is incredibly impressive!

‘Investing on Steroids’ Pays Off as Thematic ETFs Trounce Market

For returns more than triple the stock market average so far this year, look no further than a quirky group of exchange-traded funds that bet on the latest investment fads. The top three performing U.S.-listed, non-leveraged ETFs this year are so-called thematic funds — or niche products that focus on categories. From marijuana, to solar power and clean energy, portfolios constructed with companies betting on industrial and social transformations are trouncing rivals across the broader equity market. While it’s only the end of February, their performance has been astounding. The ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF, ticker MJ, which wagers on the growth of cannabis, has surged nearly 50 percent. A fund that focuses on solar power, the Invesco Solar ETF, TAN, and the Invesco Wilderhill Clean Energy ETF, PBW, which holds companies across the new-energy spectrum, have both gained more than 30 percent. 2019-02-28 11:40:25-05:00 Read the full story. Rob Arnott: Factor Investing Is ‘Overhyped’

Sometimes corporate marketing can seriously wear out the potential golden-egg-laying goose. Take factor investing. It’s “overhyped,” “oversold” and marketed as “a panacea.” So says Robert Arnott, chair and founder of Research Affiliates, who, in an interview with ThinkAdvisor, explains reasons for factor investing’s bad performance last year. Why did factor investing perform poorly last year? : One reason [lies] in construction and implementation. How many of the academics who designed factors have actually traded stocks for a living and know the potential ugliness of careless trading? That’s a key part of the issue. 2019-02-26 00:00:00 Read the full story. Interest Score: 1.5907, Positive Sentiment: 0.1512, Negative Sentiment 0.3095

Is The AI Boom Over For North Korea?

North Korea’s tryst with AI started as early as the ’90s through its state-run software research institute Korea Computer Centre and was touted to be the next leader in the realm, states a 2018 study that monitored the evolution of the technology in the Asia Pacific. In fact, much before Google DeepMind’s famed AlphaGo came into the picture, the North Korean Computer Centre centre developed an AI programme in 1997, called Eunbyul, which went on to become the champion for international computerised Go competitions for six times. “The core technology underpinning Eunbyul is, in fact, no different from that of AlphaGo. Both operate on the Monte Carlo tree search method, a heuristic search algorithm which decides the most promising move based on knowledge previously learned via machine learning,” the study states. 2019-02-27 11:35:39+00:00 Read the full story. The future of fast food? Drive-through uses AI voice assistant to take orders

Students hunting for a summer job in the future might be out of luck now that artificial intelligence has taken up a role at a fast-food restaurant. Denver’s Good Times Burgers and Frozen Custard in Colorado, brought in the technology to take drive-through customer orders. The burger bar bot greets customers as they pull up, responds to voices to take an order, and sends them to collect their items from a human colleague further down the line. For now, the bot is only taking breakfast orders in one restaurant but the start-up behind the technology, Valyant AI, hopes it will soon become a trend worldwide. It claims the tool will benefit employees by eliminating “the drudgery of taking 400 customer orders over the course of a shift”. Businesses automating the ordering process will enjoy “increased order sizes” and reduced fraud, it says. Good Times Burgers boss Scott Lefever said that the artificial intelligence served as a useful backup. The restaurants are usually staffed with three workers for breakfast shifts. If the weather is bad or an employee doesn’t show up, the new tool “can truly save the morning,” he claimed. 2019-02-27 00:00:00 Read the full story. Citizen Engagement: How AI is Helping New York City Dept. of Social Services

The New York City Department of Social Services (DSS) has a staff of around 18,000 and offers public assistance and employment services to over three million citizens. In one of their initiatives, called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), employees of the government agency needed to process around 70,000 SNAP applications per month. Citizens wishing to avail the DSS services were largely walking into the government’s brick and mortar service centers to submit their SNAP applications. IBM and DSS engaged in a private-public partnership to develop the portal. The IBM Watson Health Government team was tasked with finding a scalable solution to maximize outreach to the customer base. IBM was allowed to access data from PC banks at 15 of DSS’ physical service centers. This allowed IBM to access user feedback that illuminated trends in what people wished to see from the program. According to Lauren Aaronson, Assistant Deputy Commissioner for the Office of Business Process Innovation at DSS, after the project with IBM, over 75% of SNAP applications were submitted online, and foot traffic in the physical service centers was reduced by 30%. 2019-03-01 15:00:26+00:00 Read the full story. Probabilistic Graphical Models: Bayesian Networks – Towards Data Science

In this article, I will be giving a detailed overview of Bayesian Networks which forms a class of Directed Graphical Models (DGM). I will be covering the recapitulation of Probability which forms the basis of this approach. A wide variety of tasks in the real world requires a person to reason: to take available information and take a decision or conclusion about a certain problem. For example, we need to decide on the restaurant we want to go for dinner. What can be the possible features to decide on? The venue, cuisine, distance from home, pricing etc. In general, we can write a custom program to answer our query (a nested if-else), but that will not be robust. If it encounters an additional feature, we might have to re-write the model, which certainly seems a less feasible solution. To overcome the aforementioned complication, we will use a different approach: Declarative Representation. In this paradigm, we construct a model based on the task which would like to reason. Model encodes the knowledge of how the system works. Key features of this methodology are to separate knowledge and reasoning. Decision-making in real-world applications come with a level of uncertainty which corresponds to an uncertainty in the model building. That’s where the Probability comes in. The math of probability theory provides us with a framework for considering multiple outcomes and their likelihood. 2019-03-03 15:06:17.388000+00:00 Read the full story. Why is Data Science Relevant to Marketing? This is the first fundamental concept you need to understand. Data science in marketing is about taking raw data and translating it into raw insights. There are thousands of different statistics a business can generate, and most of them will turn out to be irrelevant alone. It’s the job of the data scientist to take these thousands of stats and translate them into usable insights that a marketing department can begin to implement. 2019-03-01 16:56:06+00:00 Read the full story. Even Vermont’s first-of-its-kind law, which went into effect last month, doesn’t require data brokers to disclose who’s in their databases, what data they collect, or who buys it. Nor does it require brokers to give consumers access to their own data or opt out of data collection.
