A Quiet Week, so I give you remastering Classic Sci-Fi in HD and 4K using off the shelf AI!

To remaster the original series, CaptRabau used an AI-powered image upscale tool called AI Gigapixel. Other tools used in this process were FFmpeg to export frames and VirtualDub to combine the upscaled frames with audio.

Or perhaps a deep learning robot that will tidy your room!!

Amazon should “pick up” on this robot featuring an origami-inspired gripper with a special touch

It can sometimes be tough to grasp just how quickly advances are happening in robotics, whether it’s taking place on a warehouse floor or via an artificially intelligent dog that has learned how to open a door. Researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and Harvard University deserve a hand for what they’ve developed. In a paper released Thursday, researchers detail a robot with an origami-inspired gripper that has the combined qualities of softness and strength that enable it to lift a range of heavy, large, and unusually-shaped objects. 2019-03-14 17:21:13-07:00 Read the full story. Alt Data Moves From ‘Nice’ to ‘Need’

Alternative data has moved into the mainstream. Data found off the beaten path of wire services and economic reports was an input in investment decision-making at 79% of financial firms surveyed in the third quarter of 2018, according to a Dataminr and WBR Insights report. Notably, 82% of non-users said they plan to use alt data within a year. In essence, four of five trading and investment firms source data from social media, credit-card transactions, weather reports, satellite imagery, and other non-traditional areas. And of those who aren’t, four of five soon will. “It’s no longer the case that alternative data is ‘nice to have’,” said Ed Oliver, VP, Strategic Accounts at Dataminr. “It’s now ‘need to have’.” 2019-03-11 18:29:27+00:00 Read the full story. 8 Pretrained Models to Learn Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Multi-purpose models are the talk of the NLP world. These models power the NLP applications we are excited about – machine translation, question answering systems, chatbots, sentiment analysis, etc. A core component of these multi-purpose NLP models is the concept of language modelling. In simple terms, the aim of a language model is to predict the next word or character in a sequence. We’ll understand this as we look at each model here. If you’re a NLP enthusiast, you’re going to love this section. Now, let’s dive into 5 state-of-the-art multi-purpose NLP model frameworks. I have provided links to the research paper and pretrained models for each model. Go ahead and explore them! 2019-03-18 04:16:07+00:00 Read the full story. Machine Learning Engineer: Best Job in the United States?

What’s the best job in the United States? According to a new study by Indeed, it’s machine learning engineer. The job-posting website reached that conclusion after analyzing two factors: fastest job-posting growth between 2015 and 2018, and highest average salaries. In other words, people are hiring lots of machine learning engineers, and they’re willing to pay top dollar for them—Indeed pegged the average machine learning engineer salary at $146,085, and its growth between 2015 and 2018 at 344 percent. That outpaced other technology jobs on the list, including full-stack developer (which came in third with a $114,316 average salary and 206 percent growth) and Salesforce developer ($112,031 average salary and 129 percent growth, good for tenth place). 2019-03-18 00:00:00 Read the full story. Data science has been called “the sexiest job of the 21st century” — a sentiment I’d believe if I saw more business leaders hiring data scientists into environments where we can be effective. Instead, many of us feel misunderstood and invisible. We are the people who help inspire new directions for your business, reduce your risk of setting important decisions on fire, and automate the ineffable through machine learning and AI. Six Recommendations for Aspiring Data Scientists

Data science is a field with a huge demand, in part because it seems to require experience as a data scientist to be hired as a data scientist. But many of the best data scientists I’ve worked with have diverse backgrounds ranging from humanities to neuroscience, and it takes demonstrated experience to stand out. As a new grad or analytics professional making the jump to a data science career, it can be challenging to build a portfolio of work to demonstrate expertise in this space. I’ve been on both sides of the hiring process for data science roles and wanted to call out some of the key experiences that can help land a job as a data scientist:
  1. Get hands-on with cloud computing
  2. Create a new data set
  3. Glue things together
  4. Stand up a service
  5. Create a stunning visualization
  6. Write a white paper

A team distilled this information into keywords linked to different diagnoses, then fed these into the system to help it detect one of 55 diseases. The system managed to diagnose conditions as varied as common ailments like influenza and hand-foot-mouth disease to life-threatening conditions like meningitis with 90% to 97% accuracy. Its accuracy was compared to 20 pediatricians. It managed to outperform the junior ones but more senior doctors had a higher success rate. Study tracks China’s ‘startling’ challenge to America in artificial intelligence research

China wants to become the world leader in artificial intelligence by 2030 — but a new analysis by Seattle’s Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, or AI2, suggests that Chinese researchers are on track to take the lead well before that. The analysis is based on a tally of the most impactful research papers in the AI field, as measured by AI2’s Semantic Scholar academic search engine. “If current trends continue, within five years, China will surpass us in terms of the top, highest-impact papers,” the institute’s CEO, Oren Etzioni, told GeekWire. “The other thing to realize is that citations are what you might call a lagging indicator, because the paper has to be published, people have to read it, and they have to write their own paper and cite it.” Thus, the analysis is likely to understate China’s current influence in AI research, Etzioni said. “The bottom line is, Chinese AI research is startling in quantity and quality,” he said. AI2’s findings are consistent with what tech analysts have been saying over the past year or two. Last year, an analysis by CB Insights found that 48 percent of the $15.2 billion invested in AI startups globally in 2017 went to China, with just 38 percent going to U.S. startups. 2019-03-13 14:00:31-07:00 Read the full story. The AI Roles Some Companies Forget to Fill

AI is almost everywhere in the news today, and the drive to create and implement AI solutions is creating an enormous talent gap. An estimated 80% of companies are already investing in AI and most are facing challenges hiring the capabilities they need to implement a useful AI application or product. It’s clear that there is an intensively competitive market for artificial intelligence and machine learning specialists. Many companies first attempt to hire Ph.D.-level data scientists with expertise in AI algorithms and “feature engineering.” Some analysts have even equated “AI talent” with such researchers. However, AI talent goes far beyond machine learning Ph.D’s. Equally important and less understood are the set of talent issues emerging around AI product development and engineering. Most firms have not filled these roles, and their AI projects are suffering as a result. 2019-03-14 13:00:56+00:00 Read the full story. Companies that are embracing using new technologies, automation, Big Data, Machine Learning, and innovation are gaining market share on the list, and are disrupting older legacy businesses that have been slower to adapting and transforming to digital changes. In fact 5 of the 6 biggest companies (Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Facebook) by market cap valuation are data technology businesses. Companies that understand the true value of their data and leverage it with advanced analytics technologies are seeing continued growth.
