Nvidia AI turns sketches into photorealistic landscapes in seconds

Today at Nvidia GTC 2019, the company unveiled a stunning image creator. Using generative adversarial networks, users of the software are with just a few clicks able to sketch images that are nearly photorealistic. The software will instantly turn a couple of lines into a gorgeous mountaintop sunset. This is MS Paint for the AI age. Called GauGAN, the software is just a demonstration of what’s possible with Nvidia’s neural network platforms. It’s designed to compile an image how a human would paint, with the goal being to take a sketch and turn it into a photorealistic photo in seconds. In an early demo, it seems to work as advertised. Read the Full Story CloudQuant Thoughts… Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference was held last week in San Jose so obviously Nvidia related news items dominated this week. Still, you cannot argue with the impressive strides being made by Nvidia in AI and graphics, ML workstations built using Nvidia chipsets and consequent drop down of features to beginners and low level users with Nvidia chipsets in their own machines.

A Street-Level View Of Neighborhood Change (Science Friday Podcast – 11m)

Gentrification happens when a previously low-income or working class neighborhood sees an influx of well-off new residents. Rents go up, new development sets in, and the neighborhood’s original residents may be displaced by those with more money. Cities who can recognize gentrification in progress can take steps to prevent displacement and funnel resources, or even slow the neighborhood’s changes directly. But while a new yoga studio or fancy coffee shop may be one obvious sign of rising rents, there are earlier indications that might help cities fend off some of the side effects sooner—building improvements like new siding, landscaping, and more go markedly up as new money arrives. A research team at the University of Ottawa describes one new tool in the toolkit: they turned to Google’s Street View, and taught an AI system to recognize when an individual house had been upgraded. Putting those upgrades on a map revealed not just areas the researchers already knew were gentrifying, but also other pockets where the process had begun unnoticed. Michael Sawada, a professor of geography, environment, and geomatics at the University of Ottawa, explains the big data approach to catching gentrification in action. Read the Full Story CloudQuant Thoughts… Incredibly impressive usage of modern alternative data and machine learning to answer a modern question in incredible detail. It is only a pity that, as mentioned in the podcast, Google recently decreased the number of free streetview images from 25k per day to 25k free per month.

Preventing bias in ML models, with code

With all the tools democratizing machine learning these days, it’s easier than ever to build high accuracy machine learning models. But even if you build a model yourself using an open source framework like TensorFlow or Scikit Learn, it’s still mostly a black box – it’s hard to know exactly why your model made the prediction it did. As model builders, we’re responsible for the predictions generated by our models and being able to explain these … 2019-03-24 00:00:00 Read the full story. Deadline Looms for Alt Data Skeptics

Portfolio managers have not missed the bus regarding incorporating alternative data into their investment strategies, but it is leaving soon, according to the experts. Skeptics may think that it is too late since everyone is already using it and seeing the same signals, according to Olga Kokareva, head of data sourcing and strategy at Quantstellation and who spoke recently at an industry panel. “It’s going to be too late because if you don’t use it …you will not be able to compete with everyone who is,” she noted. For the past several years many in the industry have defined alternative data as non-traditional data that can help detect trading signals. However alternative data can be viewed as new data that has never been available previously, such as online sentiment data, logistics data from package-delivery firms, or point-of-sale data. Other alternative data sets could be existing data that analysts view in a new way. 2019-03-19 19:00:54+00:00 Read the full story. Finding the right model parameters

If you’ve been reading about Data Science and/or Machine Learning, you must have come across articles and projects that work with MNIST dataset. The dataset includes a set of 70,000 images where each image is a handwritten digit from 0 to 9. I also decided to use the same dataset to understand how fine tuning the Machine Learning model parameters can create a difference. This article explains how I used GridSearchCV to find the best fit parameters for this dataset and used them to increase the accuracy and improve the confusion matrix. You can find the code in the GitHub repository below. 2019-03-25 01:00:19.926000+00:00 Read the full story. The Actual Difference Between Statistics and Machine Learning

No, they are not the same. If machine learning is just glorified statistics, then architecture is just glorified sand-castle construction. I am, to be quite honest, tired of hearing this debate reiterated on social media and within my University on a near-daily basis. Usually, this is accompanied by somewhat vague statements to explain away the issue. Both sides are guilty of doing this. I hope that by the end of this article you will have a more informed position on these somewhat vague terms. 2019-03-24 23:39:28.504000+00:00 Read the full story. How Walmart Uses GPUs for Better Demand Forecasting

During a presentation at Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference (GTC) this week, the director of data science for Walmart Labs shared how the company’s new GPU-based demand forecasting model achieved a 1.7% increase in forecast accuracy compared to the existing approach. The technology lab for the world’s largest company was pitted against an existing demand forecasting system that was developed by JDA Software. That system was no slouch, but Walmart’s internal developers say they have come up with a better approach to predict demand for 100,000 different products carried at each of the company’s 4,700 or so stores in the United States. 2019-03-22 00:00:00 Read the full story. AI is unlocking a booming warehouse automation market

Warehouse and logistics robots will be a $30 billion dollar industry by 2022, according to American analysts, who forecast the current $8.3 billion of worldwide revenue from the the technology will more than triple over the next three years. Locally, Gartner says the expected automation boom is the result of artificial intelligence providing automated processes with the flexibility and scalability to make it more viable and realistic for new industries, including retail. “Whilst it sounds really cool and it sounds really robotic driven, it’s actually driven by AI computer vision: the ability to rapidly assess and utilise vision to determine ‘ok, I am reading this, this is what I’m looking for, ok there’s the item and it’s not perfectly positioned’. Chief Safety Officers Needed in AI: The Case of AI Self-Driving Cars

Many firms think of a Chief Safety Officer (CSO) in a somewhat narrow manner as someone that deals with in-house occupational health and safety aspects occurring solely in the workplace. Though adherence to proper safety matters within a company are certainly paramount, there is an even larger role for CSO’s that has been sparked by the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. Emerging AI systems that are being embedded into a company’s products and services has stoked the realization that a new kind of Chief Safety Officer is needed, one with wider duties and requiring a dual internal/external persona and focus. In some cases, especially life-or-death kinds of AI-based products such as AI self-driving cars, it is crucial that there be a Chief Safety Officer at the highest levels of a company. The CSO needs to be provided with the kind of breadth and depth of capability required to carry out their now fuller charge. By being at or within the top executive leadership, they can aid in shaping the design, development, and fielding of these crucial life-determining AI systems. 2019-03-19 14:30:20+00:00 Read the full story.
