Avoiding the Herd in Overcrowded Alt Data

Fundamental investment managers are mining alternative data, but some worry that the same data sets have been sold to too many people and the strategies may be overcrowded. Experts at a recent panel discussion on alternative data brought some clarity to how alternative data is categorized and what are the big challenges faced by fundamental asset managers, quants and hedge funds finding tradeable signals building models. But some of the strategies are no longer as profitable as they were initially. “There is no amount of alpha that exists forever and ever. Eventually it gets exploited,” said Erez Katz, CEO and co-founder of Lucena Research, an Atlanta-based predictive analytics firm. Lucena provides a platform that extracts actionable signals from data using machine learning technology. However, it is possible to prolong the lifespan of signals to buy or sell gleaned from alternative data, said Katz. “The idea is to find data in the context of hard-to-find combinations of multiple factors from multiple data sets that can provide information that is not available to the naked eye. This is what we see are the needs of consumers on the buy side,” said Katz. 2019-04-18 15:36:42 Read the full story. But how you look at the data is important. If you look at the data the same way that everyone else looks at the data then you will get the same result.. nothing unique. But if you can develop a habit of looking at data creatively you will generate your own unique data-points. Particularly if you combine two different data sources. Nolan Bushnell – Founder of Atari and a long time favorite of mine – said it best “Whenever I visit a City and they have a convention center, I always try to attend a show. It doesn’t matter what it is for, the more obscure the better, because then I can combine it with something only I know and create a completely new thing in the universe.”

Investors Are Not Waiting Three Years With ETFs

New ETFs keep launching on a weekly basis, and not long after CFRA establishes a quantitative forward-looking rating. While some others in the industry wait for a three-year anniversary, we understand there’s demand to learn about new products early in their lifecycle. Indeed, there are nine ETFs that began trading in the last three years, rated by CFRA and that have a market capitalization greater than $1 billion. Using AI to Make Knowledge Workers More Effective

New AI capabilities that can recognize context, concepts, and meaning are opening up surprising new pathways for collaboration between knowledge workers and machines. Experts can now provide more of their own input for training, quality control, and fine-tuning of AI outcomes. Machines can augment the expertise of their human collaborators and sometimes help create new experts. These systems, in more closely mimicking human intelligence, are proving to be more robust than the big data-driven systems that came before them. And they could profoundly affect the 48% of the US workforce that are knowledge workers—and the more than 230 million knowledge-worker roles globally. But to take full advantage of the possibilities of this smarter AI, companies will need to redesign knowledge-work processes and jobs. 2019-04-19 13:00:00+00:00 Read the full story. The new digital divide is between people who opt out of algorithms and people who don’t

Every aspect of life can be guided by artificial intelligence algorithms–from choosing what route to take for your morning commute, to deciding whom to take on a date, to complex legal and judicial matters such as predictive policing. Big tech companies like Google and Facebook use AI to obtain insights on their gargantuan trove of detailed customer data. This allows them monetize users’ collective preferences through practices such as micro-targeting, a strategy used by advertisers to narrowly target specific sets of users. In parallel, many people now trust platforms and algorithms more than their own governments and civic society. An October 2018 study suggested that people demonstrate “algorithm appreciation,” to the extent that they would rely on advice more when they think it is from an algorithm than from a human. 2019-04-18 08:00:06 Read the full story. McKinsey: Traditional Asset Managers Are Embracing AI and Alternative Data • Integrity Research

A recent McKinsey white paper argues that artificial intelligence is broadly impacting the asset management industry, not only transforming the traditional investment process. As more asset managers bring AI in-house, the demand for external research products will shift as internal machine learning subsumes external analyst and sales roles. In “Advanced analytics in asset management: Beyond the buzz”, McKinsey reports that AI usage has accelerated over the last two years and is now being applied in a wide range of areas within asset managers: “A broad set of firms are embracing new analytics methods at multiple points across the asset management value chain—and beyond the alpha-generating use cases favored by quant firms.” Although investment management remains a key use case, AI is also being utilized to improve product distribution and create operational efficiency. 2019-04-15 00:58:57+00:00 Read the full story. ‘Data Scientist’ Title Evolving Into New Thing

Who is a data scientist, and what do they do? It’s a worthy question, and one that’s been asked an untold number of times over the years. But now it appears the job definition of the data scientist is changing into something new. The big question, then, is what replaces it? The traditional definition of a data scientist is somebody who has the requisite skills to build applications that can manipulate large amounts of data to affect some positive change in an organization. The Venn diagram of the data scientist typically shows strength in three overlapping areas: mathematics/statistics, computer science, and business expertise (although there’s often less emphasis on the third category, owing to the rarity of these “unicorns”). In response to the steep demand for data scientists and the kingly salaries they command, universities revamped their curricula and degree programs, and began churning out freshly minted data scientists ready to spin big data into gold for an eager industry. 2019-04-17 00:00:00 Read the full story. Decision Making Is More Than Quantitative Problem Solving

“All my best decisions in life and work have been made with heart, intuition, courage and not analysis.” — Jeff Bezos at Economic Club of Washington 2018 For years I had a mental model that equated decision making to quantitative problem solving. In this mental model, a decision can be made when a quantitative problem is solved; for example, a new drug should not get an approval (decision making) if its treatment effect is not statistically better than a comparison drug (quantitative problem solving). I have had this mental model for a long time, because this mental model not only mirrors my experience in how I approached textbook problems quantitatively at school, but also speaks directly to the popular concept of data driven decision making in workplace. This mental model treats decision making as a smooth continuum of quantitative problem solving, and makes me believe that I know decision making just because I know quantitative problem solving. Different from my imaginary decision making, decision making on the ground is a dynamic process that can either rely on or be completely independent of quantitatively problem solving. Through my work, I am shocked by the mismatch between decision making and quantitative problem solving; many data scientists also admit their data results are not well taken by their business partners (link). 2019-04-22 14:36:54.500000+00:00 Read the full story. Startup Using AI to Transform the Oil Trade

Artificial intelligence has been making inroads into the oil and gas industry for a while now after the industry realized all the benefits it could reap from the deployment of these technologies. Now, it has begun changing oil and gas trading as well. First of all, it bears noting the term artificial intelligence has developed into an umbrella term for a host of predictive and analytical technologies that are a far cry from the average layman’s idea of AI, that is, machines capable of independent thought. We are not there yet. Yet the technology has advanced sufficiently to begin transforming the oil and gas industry, including the trade of these commodities and products. For now, the space of AI-enabled energy trading providers is relatively empty. One notable recent addition to it was OilX, an oiltech startup that provides traders with real-time oil analytics based on a combination of satellite tracking data and reports from various official organizations, including customs, JODI, and statistics agencies. 2019-04-19 14:00:46+00:00 Read the full story. How Machine Vision Keeps The Flavour Of Your Potato Chips Intact

Most of us are familiar with the packaging videos thanks to NatGeo’s mega-factories. The food and beverages industry giants like Pepsico bring over $ 60 billion in revenue per year. To meet the high consumption rate and to maintain the consistency in taste and texture of the product, companies go to great lengths by deploying state-of-the-art tech. Machine learning has been put to use for improving user experience in products like homepods, mobile phones etc. But when it comes to food, there isn’t much room for experimentation, especially for legacy products like pepsi-cola or potato chips. Customers will find out any change in the experience. This unlike other products is more tangible and personal. So, to maintain the consistency, at Pepsico, AI is being used to check the texture of the chips without destroying them. In an interview to a leading online portal on automation technology, Shahmeer Mirza from Pepsico R&D, gave a brief overview of the company deploys AI and ML. Ever since its merger with Frito-Lay, Pepsico has more or less dominated the food and beverages industry. It has grown into a powerhouse that includes brands like Tropicana, Lay’s , Cheetos and Gatorade among many others. 2019-04-22 12:56:13+00:00 Read the full story. Predicting Movie Genres using Multi-Label Classification in NLP

I was intrigued going through this amazing article on building a multi-label image classification model last week. The data scientist in me started exploring possibilities of transforming this idea into a Natural Language Processing (NLP) problem. That article showcases computer vision techniques to predict a movie’s genre. So I had to find a way to convert that problem statement into text-based data. Now, most NLP tutorials look at solving single-label classification challenges (when there’s only one label per observation). But movies are not one-dimensional. One movie can span several genres. Now THAT is a challenge I love to embrace as a data scientist. I extracted a bunch of movie plot summaries and got down to work using this concept of multi-label classification. And the results, even using a simple model, are truly impressive. 2019-04-22 04:27:56+00:00 Read the full story. Interest Score: 1.2376, Positive Sentiment: 0.1315, Negative Sentiment 0.1256

Big Data: Replacing the Vs with a Single D

I can remember the first time people started to talk about “Big Data”. It may be a hackneyed phrase today, but some years ago it took the world of BI and analytics by storm. What then ensued was a mad frenzy to come up with a good definition that encapsulated what was meant by the term. Somehow the expression was meant to symbolize more than data that was big. So, cue the onset of creative people and the letter V. Folks started with the now much overused volume, velocity and variety, but then others set about adding to the list, coming up with a whole host of other v-words, including veracity, visualization, value, variability and so on. 2019-04-19 07:30:46+00:00 Read the full story. Want to Play ‘Dota 2’ Against an A.I. Bot? Now’s Your Chance.

Do you have what it takes to beat an artificial intelligence (A.I.) construct at its own game? Now’s your chance: OpenAI, the sorta-non-profit devoted to creating “safe” A.I., is opening up registrations to challenge OpenAI Five, its platform that can play the online game “Dota 2.” OpenAI is already capable of competing against (and beating) some of the best human players of “Dota 2,” so if you can’t play the game on that level, chances are pretty good that it will vaporize you in the name of perfecting A.I. For those who’ve never played the game, it’s an arena battler that tasks players with defending portions of a map while launching raids into the enemy’s territory. In other words, there are multiple variables to juggle during every game, resulting in complexity that makes it an ideal test-bed for artificial intelligence and machine learning. Valve, which created “Dota 2,” has boasted in the past that the game is very good at “competitive balance,” which in theory gives no player an outsized competitive advantage. 2019-04-18 00:00:00 Read the full story. Giving Generative Art Its Due

I have long dreamed of attending an art exhibition that presented the full range of generative art starting with early analog works of the late 1950s and ranging all the way up to new AI work we have seen in just the last few years. To my knowledge, no such show has ever existed. Just to attend such a show would be a dream come true for me. So when the Kate Vass galerie proposed that I co-curate a show on the history of generative art, I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
