Buy the Semiconductor ETF as China Trade Talks Continue

Buy the iShares PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXX – Get Report) on weakness to its 50-day simple moving average at $197.70. The U.S. has implemented new tariffs on China but trade talks will continue. The SOXX set its all-time intraday high of $218.00 on April 24 then began to plunge. The ETF is up 28% year to date and in bull market territory 38.8% above its Dec. 26 low of $144.79. Thursday’s close at $200.91 is 7.8% below the all-time intraday high of $218.00 set on April 24. The decline from the April 24 high to Thursday’s low touched 10% which is a buying opportunity even if a trade deal with China is not reached within the current negotiations. Over the past week investors sold more than $20 billion in global equity funds just in case the China trade talks stalled. Given a market rebound, the upside for the SOXX is to its quarterly pivot at $207.09 and potentially to next week’s risky level at $217.03. 2019-05-12 13:37:05-04:00 Read the full story. Alternative data for FX – Cuemacro

Should unusual alternative datasets provide addition value for trading (compared to common datasets)? Theoretically the answer is yes, however, in practice it will require a lot detective work. Furthermore, the answer will vary between market participants and their use cases. I’ve worked in the area of alternative data for a number of years, and am currently co-authoring The Book of Alternative Data with Alex Denev, and the book will be published by Wiley in early 2020. What’s very apparent is that equities seems to grab all the limelight when it comes to alternative datasets. What about if you’re mainly focused on FX, like myself? It can be trickier to use alternative datasets in FX, because there isn’t always the obvious mapping between an entity and the tradable asset. Sometimes, for example, data or news related to the macro economic situation is very relevant for FX, yet it might not be obvious, unless you are an experienced market practitioner. One advantage though is that because alternative datasets aren’t as commonly used in FX, there is less likelihood of data “crowding”, where too many people are trying to leverage an alt data signal, so the alpha decays. This has happened to some alternative datasets in equities, which are now much more common. 2019-05-11 00:00:00 Read the full story. NVIDIA Earnings: What to Watch on Thursday — The Motley Fool

NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) is slated to report its first-quarter results for fiscal 2020 after the market close on Thursday, May 16. The graphics processing unit (GPU) specialist is going into its earnings report surrounded by much investor uncertainty. Last quarter’s results were a train wreck, with revenue falling 24%, earnings per share plummeting 48%, and EPS adjusted for one-time items plunging 53% year over year. The primary culprit was the gaming platform’s big revenue decline, though data center’s weak growth was a contributing factor. Moreover, another headwind is potentially on the horizon due to the United States’ escalating trade war with China. Effective May 10, the Trump administration increased tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods from 10% to 25%, with China saying it’s prepared to retaliate. This is troublesome as China is NVIDIA’s second-largest market behind the U.S. 2019-05-13 00:00:00 Read the full story. Interest Score: 1.5217, Positive Sentiment: 0.1253, Negative Sentiment 0.3043

Investor Sues After an AI’s Automated Trades Cost Him $20 Million

The first-of-its-kind case could shape the future of AI legislation. Back in 2016, Futurism noted that artificial intelligence was creeping into the world of finance, analyzing market data in real-time to autonomously execute trades for investors. Now, Hong Kong real estate tycoon Samathur Li Kin-kan is suing a company that used one of those trade-executing AIs to manage his account, causing millions of dollars in losses — a first-of-its-kind court case that could help determine who should be held responsible when an AI screws up. 2019-06-13 00:00:00 Read the full story.

Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Protection

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques are altering the way organizations gather, process, and protect data. They are being used to gather massive amounts of information about internet users in the form of Big Data, and to secure and protect it. The challenge is how to maximize the use of Big Data, while simultaneously safeguarding the information and protecting the privacy of individuals. Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which focuses on privacy, has several features that demand additional protection for the privacy of Europeans. (Expect the U.S. to follow within a few years.) The introduction of the GDPR has created the need for more complicated Machine Learning systems. Lilian Edwards, a University of Strathclyde law professor in Glasgow, Scotland, stated: “Big Data is completely opposed to the basis of data protection. I think people have been very glib about saying we can make the two reconcilable, because it’s very difficult.” 2019-05-09 07:35:01+00:00 Read the full story. Financial storytelling using time series classification

When it comes to narratives, financial markets are particularly appealing because they only ever move on one axis over time. A person can be hungry yet happy, but in finance things go up or down; get stronger or weaker; expand or contract. Using Ant Colony and Genetic Evolution to Optimize Ride-Sharing Trip Duration

Urban transportation is going through a rapid and significant evolution. Since the birth of the Internet and smartphones, we have become increasingly connected and are able to plan and optimize our daily commute. Along with that, large amounts of data are gathered and used to improve the efficiency of existing transportation systems. Real-time ride-sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft are using this data to revolutionize the taxi industry, laying the ground for a more connected and centrally controlled transportation structure, and building innovative systems like car-pooling. In this project, I tackled the travel time optimization problem for taxi vehicles. This can be framed as the Traveling Salesman Problem, a well-known computer science problem. The objective is to find the shortest route that visits a set of locations. For this problem, optimization techniques are required to intelligently search the solution space and find near-optimal solutions. More specifically, I first used machine learning to forecast travel times between every pair of pickup and dropoff locations. Then I used evolutionary algorithms, namely ant colony and genetic, to find the best travel itinerary for the vehicles in the dataset. 2019-05-12 13:10:35.689000+00:00 Read the full story. The basics of Deep Neural Networks

With the rise of libraries such as Tensorflow 2.0 and Fastai, implementing deep learning has become accessible to so many more people and it helps to understand the fundamentals behind deep neural networks. Hopefully this article will be of help people to people on the path of learning about deep neural networks. Back when I first learnt about neural nets and implemented my first, they were always represented as individual artificial neurons, essentially nodes with individually weighted inputs, a summed output and an activation function. When first returning into learning about deep neural networks, the concept of how this equated to matrix multiplication didn’t appear obvious. Also, linked to this is why Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and their spin-offs have helped advance deep learning results so much. 2019-05-12 22:19:41.438000+00:00 Read the full story. R Risks Python Swallowing It Whole: TIOBE

Is the R programming language in serious trouble? According to the latest update of the TIOBE Index, the answer seems to be “yes.” After managing to keep a place amongst the Index’s top 20 languages for the past three years, R has finally tumbled out. What’s Behind Lyft’s Choices in Big Data Tech

That delay in starting out actually gave Lyft a bit of an advantage in terms of architecting its big data infrastructure in the cloud, as it was able to sidestep some of the challenges that Uber faced in building out its on-prem system. Lyft and Uber, like many of the young Silicon Valley companies shaking up established business models, aren’t shy about sharing information about their computer infrastructure. They both share an ethos of openness in regards to using and developing technology. That openness is also pervasive at Google, Facebook, Twitter, and other Valley outfits that created much of the big data ecosystem, most of which is, of course, open source. 2019-05-10 00:00:00 Read the full story. Microsoft is addressing tough paradigms on the intelligent edge with Azure Data Boxes

This is not a rhetorical question: How do you move 2 petabytes of data to a cloud that can analyze it? It’s not practical to move it over the internet — even with an obscenely fast 10 Gbps connection, it would take 19 days. Over more common 45Mbps T3 connections, it’s effectively an impossibility, because it would take 12 years, according to Microsoft’s calculations. This is the problem the company faced when it was developing some of its intelligent edge offerings. Its solution is Microsoft’s Azure Data Box family, a series of appliances that offer high storage capacities. Most of the Data Boxes require customers to physically ship them to Microsoft so the data can be moved to Azure, which in a sense flips the paradigm of edge computing. Part of the idea of edge computing is, as Microsoft head of Azure IoT Sam George told VentureBeat in an interview at Build 2019, “It’s often easier to move compute to where data is than to move data where compute is.” With most of the Data Boxes, though, it’s just not feasible to do so — and thus this model is moving data to compute, not the other way around. 2019-05-10 00:00:00 Read the full story. They’re able to do that by using data to drive drilling decisions. That trend was on full display during the first quarter as several drillers delivered stronger-than-expected results, in large part because of the increased use of data and other technology to improve well productivity. 2019-05-11 00:00:00 Read the full story. Amazon Alexa transcripts live on, even after you delete voice records

Amazon doesn’t need to hear your voice recordings to know what you’ve said. It can read them. After Alexa hears its wake word — which can vary from “Echo” to “Alexa” to “computer” — the smart assistant starts listening and transcribes everything it hears. That’s why when you check your Alexa dialogue history, you can see text next to the recordings like “How’s the Weather” and “Set an Alarm.” Amazon lets you delete those voice recordings, giving you a false sense of privacy. But the company still has that data, just not as a sound bite. It keeps the text logs of the transcribed audio on its cloud servers, with no option for you to delete them. Amazon said it erases the text transcripts from Alexa’s “main system,” but is working on removing them from other areas where the data can travel. “When a customer deletes a voice recording, we also delete the corresponding text transcript associated with their account from our main Alexa systems and many subsystems, and have work underway to delete it from remaining subsystems,” an Amazon spokesperson said in an email. 2019-05-09 07:40:00-07:00 Read the full story. Do the Latest Trade Tensions Put Nvidia’s Mellanox Acquisition at Risk?

Nvidia’s (NVDA) latest acquisition still needs a key sign-off in China. That could prove problematic given the recent political posturing of President Trump. CEO Jensen Huang made a big bet on the future of datacenters with a $6.9 billion splash for Mellanox Technologies (MLNX) earlier this year, noting the importance of diversifying the gaming-heavy revenue base of the company, which has been susceptible to volatility amidst crypto use cases. “The emergence of AI and data science, as well as billions of simultaneous computer users, is fueling skyrocketing demand on the world’s datacenters,” Huang said of the deal in March. “Addressing this demand will require holistic architectures that connect vast numbers of fast computing nodes over intelligent networking fabrics to form a giant datacenter-scale compute engine.” 2019-05-06 15:09:03-04:00 Read the full story. How Modeling Weather Forecasts Improves Business Decisions

There’s no denying that weather forecasts have gotten better, which has given millions of people and businesses the ability to make better plans. However, weather forecasts are still not perfect, and that creates a gray area. But thanks to the power of data science, it’s possible to put current weather forecasts into a real-world context, and fine tune our planning even more. On average, the three-day temperature forecasts that meteorologists produced in 2017 are just as accurate as the one-day forecasts that were generated in 2005, according to Eric Floehr, the founder and CEO of Intellovations, the maker of ForecastWatch, and the co-author of a study 12-year study of weather forecasts. That’s quite the improvement in temperature forecasts, and the improvements will likely continue to improve, thanks to more data, better modeling, and cheaper computing. Meteorologists were showing some “skill” (i.e. beating a coin flip) with their nine-day forecasts in 2017, and it seems probable that we could have 15-day forecasts with some semblance of accuracy in the not-too-distant future. Despite the improvement in the science of weather forecasting, people still have a relatively poor understanding of weather forecasts, including misconceptions about the level of accuracy, Floehr says. That’s why he created ForecastWatch: to help businesspeople connect the dots between the available weather forecasts, the impacts it has on people, and what that means for their business. 2019-05-08 00:00:00 Read the full story. Facebook opens another Seattle building with room for 1,000 people, adding to huge engineering hub

Facebook’s Seattle office was already its largest engineering center outside of the Menlo Park, Calif. homebase, and now the social giant is opening up a new building with room for 1,000 more people. Teams have begun moving into a building called Arbor Blocks 300, a six-story building with 196,000 square feet of office space at 300 Eighth Ave. N. in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood, the company said. The office, which sits in the heart of… 2019-05-08 17:14:59-07:00 Read the full story. Interest Score: 0.8550, Positive Sentiment: 0.0814, Negative Sentiment 0.0407

How Interactive Technology is Revolutionizing Workplace Collaboration

From artificial intelligence wearables to interactive displays connected to cloud SaaS platforms, collaborative technologies are changing the way we work, as well as where we work. Do you have specialist workers located in different offices in faraway lands? Perhaps your team includes contractors and freelancers who work remotely. More and more companies are moving in these directions, and for good economic reasons. Problems can result from this trend, however. Does your team feel disconnected and sporadic, and do varying time zones delay the manner in which work is being completed? How does management keep everybody motivated and working together on deadline? The workplace has become a multi-faceted beast, and the interactive technologies that have been emerging during the past decade have made workplaces more flexible, productive and satisfying in order to solve these issues.

How To Create Simple Keyword-based Movie Recommender Models From Scratch

Have you ever tried to use a movie recommender? In theory, it is something useful that can help figure out what to watch next instead of browsing through Netflix for a few hours, but their results tend to be hit-or-miss. This is a problem that most people can relate to, so I decided to create a homemade recommender system myself and share it in this blog post. I will show you how to create 3 simple recommender models from scratch that accept a movie as input and return the “n” most similar movies as output, with “n” being provided by the user. In general, recommender systems are either content-based or collaborative with the user’s history and interests. I chose to create content-based models since they make predictions based on the specific input item (movie) and not based on the user. Note that the recommendations for this blog are based entirely off of movie keywords. As you will see, it is fairly simple to use other text information, such as plot outlines or plot synopses, instead of movie keywords. 2019-05-12 22:19:43.517000+00:00 Read the full story. Amazon warehouses use machines that can pack boxes 5 times faster than humans

Amazon.com is rolling out machines to automate a job held by thousands of its workers: boxing up customer orders. The company started adding technology to a handful of warehouses in recent years, which scans goods coming down a conveyor belt and envelopes them seconds later in boxes custom-built for each item, two people who worked on the project told Reuters. Amazon has considered installing two machines at dozens more warehouses, removing at least 24 roles at each one, these people said. These facilities typically employ more than 2,000 people. That would amount to more than 1,300 cuts across 55 U.S. fulfillment centers for standard-sized inventory. Amazon would expect to recover the costs in under two years, at $1 million per machine plus operational expenses, they said. 2019-05-13 00:00:00 Read the full story. TCAV: Interpretability Beyond Feature Attribution

It’s not enough to know if a model works, we need to know how it works : Sundar Pichai The emphasis today is slowly moving towards model interpretability rather than model predictions alone. The real essence of Interpretability, however, should be to make Machine learning models more understandable for humans and especially for those who don’t know much about machine learning. Machine Learning is a very powerful tool and with such power comes a responsibility to ensure that values like fairness are well reflected within the models. It is also important to ensure that the AI models do not reinforce the bias that exists in the real world. To tackle such issues, Google AI Researchers are working on a solution called TCAV (Testing with Concept Activation Vectors) to understand what signals the neural network models use for their prediction. 2019-05-09 12:50:33.893000+00:00 Read the full story. All Signs Point to Cloud Optimization

Recently, there has been a growing awareness around the issue of cost control in the public cloud. This is a heartening trend in cloud computing, specifically with regard to the public cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) market. Now that public cloud has reached a key peak in growth, there’s a common theme. While new services and products continue to develop, more and more of them are focusing on not just creating capabilities that were previously lacking—they’re focused on optimizing what already exists. ARE CLOUD SERVICES STILL GROWING? Before we dive into optimization, let’s consider how the cloud market continues to grow in 2019 and beyond. Gartner estimates that $206 billion will spent on public cloud services in 2019, up 17% from 2018 as outlined in the table below… 2019-05-15 00:00:00 Read the full story.
