Euclidean 2Q19 Letter: Forecasting Uncertainty

In this quarter’s letter, we discuss Euclidean’s continuing research on forecasting companies’ future earnings. This research builds on our previous work showing how machine learning can be applied to forecast future company fundamental data, such as earnings, from past fundamental data. While we have been reviewing the impact of allowing the learning process to explore certain additional datasets, such as industry classifications and macroeconomic trends, the primary development we discuss in this letter involves the concept of uncertainty.

CloudQuant Thoughts : Having written a number of Earnings Models and gone through the phases of Analyst predictions, Crowd Analyst predictions, we now have Machine Learning predictions. The research is interesting but it relies on lots of historical data. We now appear to be in a new upside down world where positive earnings are just as likely to result in a crash in price as a spike and vica-versa. Perhaps a “new look” at earnings should be based on zooming in on the timescale to just include the last few years data at a higher resolution.

Can the FCA keep the machines under check?

As AI investments in Fintech hit record highs, it’s time the regulators started thinking about the on-the-ground challenges of using AI for financial services. The UK’s FCA have partnered with Alan Turing Institute to study explainability and transparency while using AI.

Three key scenarios come up, when I think about what could go wrong in the marriage of Humans and Machines in financial services.

  • First, when a customer wants a service from a Bank (say a loan), and a complex AI algorithm comes back with a “NO”, what happens?
  • Second, as AI depends massively on data, what happens if the data that is used to train the machines is bad. By bad, I mean biased. Data used to train machines should not only be accurate, but also representative of real data. If a machine that is trained by bad data makes wrong decisions, who will be held accountable?
  • Third, Checks and controls need to be in place to ensure that regulators understand a complex algorithm used by banks. This understanding is absolutely essential to ensure technology doesn’t create systemic risks.

CloudQuant Thoughts : With last week’s news surrounding the Russian FaceApp, potential theft and misuse of personal data is again at the forefront of public discussion. However, most people’s first experience of AI data issues will be in their dealings with their financial institutions, particularly their banks and their insurers. We are already witnessing advertising that promotes using our cellphones as in car monitors of our driving style as a “positive” rather than a massive over-reach.

Big data: can overemphasis on data scalability compromise data quality?

I first heard the term “big data” five years ago. The concept has really changed our lives in spectacular ways.

Unfortunately, the term itself might be leading decision-makers astray. They believe that the value of big data is predicated almost entirely on its volume.

The people that have sensationalized the concept of big data deserve some of the blame. They have focused overwhelmingly on the fact that storing massive amounts of data makes certain objectives more attainable. While this is technically true, there are still other factors that need to be considered. Besides the volume of the data under their control.

A couple of years ago, CMSWire tried to draw attention to this issue. They pointed out several reasons that data quality is more important than data volume. We decided to extrapolate their message and focus on ways that data scalability could compromise the integrity of a big data campaign. Brands that understand these challenges can factor for them and get a cutting edge with their big data strategy.

CloudQuant Thoughts : How big does data have to be to be good data? It is an interesting question. And as companies push to add more and more data the quality is often overlooked. I am reminded of a recent ingest of news data that suggested a regular large burst of data in the evening of each day. Fortunately a little graphical mapping soon revealed that there was a timestamp miss-match between our market data and the new data. A very easy mistake to make.. unfortunately he rounds out the article with “Date quality over data volume: always”… Whoops!

Data Engineers: The C-Suite’s Savior

Today’s competitive marketplace requires companies to be data-driven. Why? Because data has become the fuel for organizations to deliver better and faster decisions, quickly respond to customers, and analyze, understand and act on new opportunities (or threats) ahead of the competition. However, becoming a data-driven organization is not easy. As highlighted in a recent Gartner report, “despite massive investments in data and analytics initiatives, nearly 50% of organizations report difficulties in bringing them into production.”

That’s where data engineers come in. Their role is to help the company make the best use of data to accomplish business objectives. And, as demonstrated by a recent survey of Fortune 1,000 decision makers, this role is absolutely critical as established companies are being disrupted by technology-savvy new entrants.

Surveys say 80% of big data C-suite executives acknowledge the potential threats of technology disruption and displacement, yet only 7.3% of them feel confident that they were well-prepared for the future.

Data engineers can prepare companies for the future – for technological innovation that can help them meet potential threats head on. They can automate digital transformation projects, enabling companies to bring more data-driven projects into production. And, they can empower C-suite’s desire to disrupt the industry with evolving technologies – AI, machine learning, and more.

Balancing Who Handles Data Inconsistency

Balancing Who Handles Data Inconsistency

In Production, things inevitably get wonky, and that’s normal

If there’s one thing you learn over the years while working with data, it’s that data quality “guarantees” are essentially well-intentioned fictions. Any time I get to touch an unfamiliar production database, I inevitably do some simple consistency checking, simple things like “does this unique ID actually show up only once?” “Are there duplic…

A lot is on the line for IBM and for CEO Ginny, who some have said is staking her legacy on the deal. The companies themselves believe that, combined, they are “the leading hybrid cloud provider.”

The reality is that much of their software platform revenues come from traditional infrastructure business, not public cloud. IBM’s cloud bu…

Allen Institute spinout Lexion lands $4.2M to help companies manage legal contracts with AI

Where there are lawyers, there are paper contracts — lots of them. A Seattle startup has come up with a way for in-house legal teams to get a handle on all those contracts with the help of artificial intelligence.

Lexion today announced a $4.2 million seed round led by Madrona Venture Group, with participation from Wilson Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati, a legal advisor to technology and life sciences companies.

The investment from a major law firm is unusual, but speaks to the conviction that legal experts have in Lexion.

The company originated inside the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2)…
