Alternative Data News. 31, July 2019

Finding sources and uses for alternative data can be difficult. At CloudQuant we regularly read and search the internet for new sources of data that can be used in our mission to find alpha signals and build quantitative trading strategies. We recognize that we are technology and data junkies so we wrote our own crawler that specifically seeks out web pages, posts, and news articles that give us a snapshot of what is going on in the world of Alt Data. The following is a collection of articles that we think you will find interesting from the past week.

CloudQuant Thoughts: Normally this is just a news clipping of Alternative Data stuff we are interested in. But today we want to highlight one of our Data Showcasing vendors that had a very interesting signal. Social Market Analytics (SMA) is an Alternative Data provider that uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) to determine social sentiment on StockTwits and Twitter. Their StockTwits sentiment score (s-score) had a big jump on July 25th that preceeded the after hours jump in price due to earnings announcement. The following chart shows the s-score jumping from a low of -0.078 to a high of 1.172 with an increasing s-buzz.

The Origins Of Long-Term Capital Losses And Gains

On The Origins Of Long-term Capital Losses And Gains: A Graham & Doddsville Perspective On Risk And Investing

Steven Klerck

KU Leuven

Abstract

For many individual investors and families, independent of their absolute wealth, experiencing a permanent or long-term capital loss poses the highest risk. We define a long-term capital loss/gain as a real capital loss/gain over a ten-year investment horizon. Based on our long-term investment horizon,…

Introduction to Image Segmentation with K-Means clustering

Image segmentation is an important step in image processing, and it seems everywhere if we want to analyze what’s inside the image. For example, if we seek to find if there is a chair or person inside an indoor image, we may need image segmentation to separate objects and analyze each object individually to check what it is. Image segmentation usually serves as the pre-processing before pattern recognition, feature extraction, and compression of …

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be quite a challenging topic to truly comprehend, especially for business managers, entrepreneurs and investors that lack a deep academic background in the field. Enterprise Data Unification and Knowledge Graphs: Making Complexity Simple

A challenge for large businesses working with data is how to manage and unify it. Many companies, seeking to better utilize their data, collect massive amounts of data regarding their customers’ online activity, preferences, and demographics. This can lead to the development of vast data lakes. Without a screening process, a data lake will enable “data hoarding.” A badly organized data lake is often pejoratively called a data swamp.
