Northern Trust To Expand Use of Machine Learning

Dane Fannin, head of global securities lending at Northern Trust, said the firm is discussing further applications of machine learning across the trading function in the business as it launched a pricing engine using the technology. Northern Trust announced this month that it has developed a pricing engine that uses machine learning and advanced statistical techniques in the securities lending market to forecast the rate to loan securities.

Fannin told Markets Media: “This is the first iteration of machine learning within securities lending as we saw an opportunity to improve the efficiency of pricing. We look at technology as a tool to accelerate our objective in helping clients optimise their portfolios in pursuit of increased alpha or driving out costs.“

An algorithm estimates the demand for equities in the securities lending market. Northern Trust global securities lending traders can use use these projections, with their own market intelligence, to automatically broadcast lending rates for 34 global markets. Northern Trust held approximately $1.2 (€1.1) trillion in lendable assets for more than 450 clients worldwide at the end of June this year. Fannin said that maintaining optimal pricing on all of these at point of trade and continuously through the life of the loan is intensive.

CloudQuant Thoughts… Knowing the ideal rate for loaning out a particular security is obviously beneficial for companies that manage lendable assets for third parties but it is also of great interest to traders. Having historical information relating to the availability and cost of borrowed shares and the historical data for price trends for the same period is obviously a very rich and largely untapped seam of information. CloudQuant aim is to put as many of these “interesting” data sets into the hands of researchers and managers as possible as well as helping the data owners find new and currently untapped markets for their data. We provide managed, organized sample data sets, market data, white papers and code to reproduce the performance observed in the results.

What People Hate About Being Managed by Algorithms, According to a Study of Uber Drivers

Companies are increasingly using algorithms to manage their remote workforces. Called “algorithmic management,” this approach has been most widely adopted in gig economy companies. For example, ride-hailing company Uber substantially increases its efficiency by managing some three million workers with an app that instructs drivers which passengers to pick up and which route to take.

Being managed in this way offers some benefit to self-employed workers as well: for example, Uber drivers are free to decide when and for how long they would like to work and which area they would like to serve. However, our research reveals that algorithmic management is also frustrating to workers, and their resentment can lead them to behave subversively with the potential to cause real harm to their companies. Our research also suggests some ways that companies can mitigate these concerns while still taking advantage of the benefits of management by algorithm.

CloudQuant Thoughts… It is fascinating that the issues that have plagued workers since the industrial revolution (and possibly before!) are still popping up when humans are managed by AI : Don’t micro manage me, Don’t expect me to do something without knowing why, and Don’t discount me. The big question will be whether or not the AI can learn how to keep the drivers happy. This should not be difficult. The question is, have these companies enabled any kind of feedback loop into the AI from the drivers? And what can we learn from this going forward?

AI Squares Off Against Fake News

In 2016, “fake news” was the Oxford English Dictionary’s Word of the Year. Thousands upon thousands of fake stories had plagued the internet throughout the U.S. presidential election – some shared millions and millions of times. A fake Associated Press tweet had sent stocks plummeting; teenagers in Macedonia filled cafes to earn living wages from writing fake articles. Almost overnight, fake news turned into an immensely profitable industry.

So when Reza Zafarani (an assistant professor with the electrical engineering and computer science department at Syracuse University) and his colleagues Xinyi Zhou and Kai Shu took the stage at KDD 2019 to talk about how machine learning and artificial intelligence could be employed to combat fake news, the room was packed.

Billionaires Jack Ma and Elon Musk debate good, evil and AI at conference in China

In the debate over artificial intelligence, whose side is Elon Musk on? Musk, who’s in charge of SpaceX, Tesla and the Neuralink brain interface venture, sized up the odds with AliBaba founder Jack Ma today during a widely watched one-on-one session at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai.

The way Musk sees it, the prospects aren’t great for humans if future AI agents decide to go rogue. That’s despite pronouncements from AI researchers who say machines won’t match humans anytime soon when it comes to general intelligence, as opposed to specialized AI applications such as playing chess or Go.

“The biggest mistake I see artificial intelligence researchers making is assuming that they’re intelligent,” Musk said. “Yeah, they’re not, compared to AI. And so a lot of them cannot imagine something smarter than themselves.” Musk said future AI agents will be “vastly smarter” than humans. “So what do you do with a situation like that?” he asked. “I’m not sure. I hope they’re nice.” For his part, Ma saw more promise than peril in AI.

CloudQuant Thoughts… Musk is not a great orator, you can tell his mind is running on ten different tangents of every thought he is expressing. But between the ums and aahs are often some great nuggets such as “To a computer a millisecond is an eternity, but to us it’s nothing”, “Human speech to a computer will sound like very slow tonal wheezing, kind of like whale sounds.” and “The computer will just get impatient… It will be like talking to a tree.” – Yikes.

6 Tips for Building a Training Data Strategy for Machine Learning

Without a well-defined approach for collecting and structuring training data, launching an AI initiative becomes an uphill battle. These six recommendations will help you craft a successful strategy.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are frequently used terms these days. AI refers to the concept of machines mimicking human cognition. ML is an approach used to create AI. If AI is when a computer can carry out a set of tasks based on instruction, ML is a machine’s ability to ingest, parse, and learn from that data itself in order to become more accurate or precise about accomplishing that task.

Executives in industries such as automotive, finance, government, healthcare, retail, and tech may already have a basic understanding of ML and AI. However, not everyone is an expert in developing a training data strategy, a necessary first step for realizing a high return on machine learning investments.

AI systems learn by example, and the more, high-quality examples they have, the better they’ll learn. Insufficient or low-quality training data can result in unreliable systems that reach the wrong conclusions, makes poor decisions, can’t handle real-world variation, and introduce or perpetuate bias, among other problems. Poor data is also expensive. IBM estimated that poor data quality in the United States costs the country’s economy roughly $3.1 trillion per year.

R Backers Tout Funding Milestone, Seek Comeback

Reports of the demise of R as a programming language are exaggerated, according to community leaders, who note the R Foundation has so far approved the distribution of grants and sponsorships totaling $1 million.

The milestone reported this week follows days after a report in a closely watched industry index showed the Python language growing in popularity among data science programmers at the expense of R, which slipped another two places in August rankings, down 14 percent.

Not so fast, say backers of the statistical computing and graphics programming language, who announced the million-dollar milestone on Thursday (Aug. 28). As it gears up for its fall grant application cycle, the R Consortium said grant and sponsorship recipients include development of a centralized tool called R-hub used to check R packages consisting of functions, compliant code and sample data.

AI Weekly: Cutting-edge research promises to imbue AI with contextual knowledge

Viewing scenes and making sense of them is something people do effortlessly every day. Whether it’s sussing out objects’ colors or gauging their distances apart, it doesn’t take much conscious effort to recognize items’ attributes and apply knowledge to answer questions about them.

That’s patently untrue of most AI systems, which tend to reason rather poorly. But emerging techniques in visual recognition, language understanding, and symbolic program execution promise to imbue them with the ability to generalize to new examples, much like humans.

The Data Warehouse, the Data Lake, and the Future of Analytics

Data lakes were created in response to the need for Big Data analytics that has been largely unmet by data warehousing. The pendulum swing toward data lake technology provides some remarkable new capabilities, but can be problematic if the swing goes too far in the other direction. Far from being at the end of this evolutionary process, we are in the middle of it, said Anthony Algmin, CEO of Algmin Data Leadership, during his presentation titled Data Warehouse vs. Data Lake Technology at the DATAVERSITY® Enterprise Analytics Online conference.

The data warehouse, formerly the standard source for business insights, faces serious competition from the data lake. Providing ad hoc analytics, storage for unstructured data, and unparalleled scalability, data lakes are able to handle today’s data fast-growing data demands, but they have their limitations. Algmin compared data warehouse and data lake technology and their respective roles now and going forward.

How to Choose a Scalable Data Management Solution (VIDEO)

A.M. Turing Award Laureate and database technology pioneer Michael Stonebraker delivered a welcome keynote at Data Summit 2019, titled “Big Data, Technological Disruption, and the 800-Pound Gorilla in the Corner.”

In his presentation, Stonebraker—who is an MIT Adjunct Professor and Tamr co-founder—outlined data management solution considerations as part of a larger discussion of the big data challenges facing enterprises today.

“Traditionally, vendors will sell you extract, transform, and load packages, and on top of that, they will tell you that you need master data management tools, and that’s available from the usual suspects—and that stuff does not scale. Just does not scale; that will work great on small problems,” he said.
