CloudQuant Thoughts… Fortune 500 company executives can see the benefits of AI all around them from their automated cars to impressive voice assistants like Siri but there is a dearth of knowledge of how to successsfully execute an AI strategy from start to finish. With such shortages it is even difficult for the C-suite to comprehend where AI would be best applied and most effective in their businesses.

Alphabet Stock Might Be Really Cheap if You Factor in Its AI Leadership

By almost any measure, Google is the master of applied artificial intelligence. Research papers and conferences are replete with the company’s technical achievements in the field of deep learning, today’s dominant form of AI.

And AI is also finding its way into operations and products at Google, by helping to reduce data center costs for the company’s cloud computing operations, on the one hand, and by developing new categories of offerings, such as its Waymo self-driving automobile unit.

There must be a value for all of this, but what exactly is it? It doesn’t appear to show up in the valuation of Google parent company, Alphabet (GOOGL) . The stock valuation, at a recent price of $1,214.65, is an extremely modest multiple of 5.2 times projected revenue of $162 billion this year, based on a market cap of $839 billion. At five times revenue, the stock is not reflecting the value of its tangible assets, which totaled about $121 billion in cash and cash equivalents as of last quarter; if those assets, net of long-term debt, is taken into account, the multiple is actually even cheaper, at 4.5 times.

CloudQuant Thoughts… If it is difficult/impossible for Google to put an asset value on AI then there is little hope for the rest of us. But it does appear that the leader in AI does not have any direct valuation of its AI products on its corporate assets. As the article states, in the computer revolution of the 80s it was the intangible assets that carried all the value. Are the 7th and 8th most expensive US Equities (currently $1215 per share) and 4th and 5th biggest market cap (AAPL $1079b, MSFT $1062b, AMZN $851b, GOOGL $838b and GOOG $827b) still a buy?

Data Navigator Uses NLP for Queries

A new AI-based data “navigation” system is billed as the first analytics platform to use natural language processing to generate SQL queries from spoken requests. The result is a sort of virtual assistant for data analysts.

Promethium, a data management startup based in Menlo Park, Calif., said this week its NLP-generated SQL queries can be used to assemble data across different systems and platforms. The navigation system is based on the company’s AI and machine learning-driven contextual automation tool. The software can be used to locate data, then present it in form that is most useful to business analysts.

Founded in February 2018, Promethium said users can ask a question, prompting its system to locate data and demonstrate how it should be assembled. The system then generates an SQL statement to access the desired data before executing the query.

CloudQuant Thoughts… Context is the hot thing with AI assistants. Humans expect a continuing conversation. “How many pictures did I take this weekend?”, “How many had dogs?”. They expect their AI assistant to know when a statement is a continuation of the previous statement and when it is a new statement. It is one thing to generate an SQL query from a human statement but very few SQL queries are completed after the first query. As such I would assume they have this in hand!

Genius On My Shoulder

At the end of every section in this article, you can read the text that an artificial intelligence predicted would come next.

I glanced down at my left thumb, still resting on the Tab key. What have I done? Had my computer become my co-writer? That’s one small step forward for artificial intelligence, but was it also one step backward for my own?

The skin prickled on the back of my neck, an involuntary reaction to what roboticists call the “uncanny valley”—the space between flesh and blood and a too-human machine.

For several days, I had been trying to ignore the suggestions made by Smart Compose, a feature that Google introduced, in May, 2018, to the one and a half billion people who use Gmail—roughly a fifth of the human population. Smart Compose suggests endings to your sentences as you type them….

CloudQuant Thoughts… A deep New Yorker article where a writer questions how smart AI autocomplete is getting as he experiences it completing his sentences, often predicting his own output… and improving on it! “It was therefore disconcerting how frequently the AI was able to accurately predict my intentions, often when I was in mid-sentence, or even earlier.”

Data Lakes Get Structured

The explosion of unstructured and partially structured data has made traditional data lakes harder to manage. Adding to the challenge are “brittle” data pipelines that are time-consuming to create as well as ephemeral.

Nvidia uses federated learning to create medical imaging AI

one Nvidia claims is a first for medical image analysis. The technique can allow data-sharing between hospitals and researchers while preserving patient privacy.

Federated learning is an approach to machine learning that — when using a client-server approach — can eliminate the need to create a single data lake in order to train models. Instead, models are trained locally on devices that then transfer insights from multiple machines to a central model.

“You need to get to these innovations, and I believe there’s kind of two ways. One, which we released last August, is create the best generalizable model tha…

Edge is core to future business models, but cybersecurity must evolve: Brad Surak

As the world sees the distribution of billions of smart devices, and literally trillions of new sensors, the current computing paradigms will struggle to meet the needs of new applications in such an environment.

Edge computing is emerging as part of the solution. In the edge computing model, programming and analysis are pushed out to the device (at the edge) rather than sent back to a cloud to a core data center for processing or analysis.

Yellowbrick Data Enters Cloud Data Warehouse Wars

The concept of data storage warehouses is pretty old-school, going back to 1951 for physical document/film storage facilities (Iron Mountain and IBM), then to the 1990s for on-premises-only IT warehouse solutions. A lot has changed since Amazon launched the S3 cloud storage service in late 2006 and its Glacier online cold storage and backup service in 2012.

Now enterprises are dipping their toes into so-called data lakes of unstructured data in …

How ML Helps Solve the Big Data Transform/Mastering Problem

Despite the astounding technological progress in big data analytics, we largely have yet to move past manual techniques for important tasks, such as data transformation and master data management. As data volumes grow, the productivity gap posed by manual methods grows wider, putting the dreams of AI- and machine learning-powered automation further out of reach. Can ML itself help to close that gap? Mike Stonebraker sure thinks so.

It’s Time to Productionize Data Science

To make Data Science part of business value creation, business users have to be part of the Data Science lifecycle. They need to be able to go back to Data Science teams and provide feedback so that the Data Science process reflects their requirements — and quickly. Models may need to be updated or functionalities automated, for instance.

What businesses need is Data Science productionization. That’s the merger of c…

Amazon explains how Alexa learns new languages

Amazon’s Alexa assistant recently learned to speak new languages globally: Hindi, U.S. Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. Synthetic data aided substantially in this, explained Amazon senior manager for research science Janet Slifka in a post on the Alexa blog this morning, but it wasn’t the end-all-be-all solution. The languages required new bootstrapping tools.

One of the tools in question was developed by Amazon’s Alexa AI Applied Modeling and…
