The AltDataNewsletter by CloudQuant

Finding sources and uses for alternative data can be difficult. At CloudQuant we regularly read and search the internet for new sources of data that can be used in our mission to find alpha signals and build quantitative trading strategies. We recognize that we are technology and data junkies so we wrote our own crawler that specifically seeks out web pages, posts, and news articles that give us a snapshot of what is going on in the world of Alt Data. The following is a collection of articles that we think you will find interesting from the past week.

CloudQuant CEO John “Morgan” Slade to speak on ESG Panel at the London 2019 Battle of the Quants : Big Data

Alternative and ESG Data are hot topics at the Battle. We will hear from some very successful quant managers on how they are finding the signals in the noise. With data proliferation, how are managers finding the good data then figuring what has predictive value. Trying to decipher data relevance relative to sustainability (ESG) is another data set that is getting a lot of attention lately, especially in Europe. A very knowledgeable panel will prove that investing while protecting the environment in as a guide can yield incremental alpha; which data shows the greatest promise?

Morgan will be speaking on the panel at 2:10 on Tuesday December 10th : “Will the Most Predictive ESG Data Set ‘Please Stand Up’: New ESG Data Sets Continue to Emerge, which Data Set can Quants Use to Generate the Highest Alpha”. Location De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms.

Be sure to say hello!

Are There Any Jobs Out There?

I have scraped Glassdoor listings looking for some data related job titles and compared the results with a survey conducted by Kaggle.

First let’s create a metric to enable us compare those two different datasets and also different countries. The following radar charts express the number of Kagglers (this is how I will be referring to Kaggle users) and job listings proportionally to the total of each country.

CloudQuant Thoughts : Quite a nice bit of analysis, I was more interested in his sources, particularly Kaggle’s third annual Machine Learning and Data Science Survey (2019) Public Data Set. The survey was live for three weeks in October 2019 and got a total of 19,717 responses. The results include raw numbers about who is working with data, what’s happening with machine learning in different industries, and the best ways for new data scientists to break into the field.

Quandl Releases New E-Commerce Dataset Ahead of Holidays

Quandl, the alternative data provider owned by Nasdaq, has released a timely, new alternative dataset just ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two days of major store sales in the US, which leads to the mania that is holiday shopping. Dubbed E-Commerce Intelligence (ECI), the dataset tracks all the transactions of 500 companies and 800 brands over more than 350 online retailers across North America and EMEA.

Nasdaq’s Quandl, an alternative data provider, has launched the E-Commerce Intelligence (ECI) dataset, which allows investors to track product-level e-commerce transactions on a near real-time basis. The exclusive dataset follows the day-to-day transactions of 800 brands and 500 companies across more than 350 e-retailers in North America and EMEA, capturing USD15 billion worth of product sales annually.

ECI data is available daily with a seven-day lag, offering a distinct speed advantage over consumer sales datasets currently available on the market. Investors can monitor early traction on new products, follow the entire lifecycle of a product, monitor same-store sales and measure products against their competitors.

CloudQuant Thoughts : Weirdly Adobe are considered the current experts in the field of ECI. From their Cyber Monday review here is their description of how they gather their data.. “Adobe leverages Adobe Sensei, Adobe’s AI and machine learning technology, to identify retail insights from trillions of data points that flow through Adobe Analytics and Adobe Commerce Cloud, part of Adobe Experience Cloud. Adobe analyzes one trillion visits to U.S. retail sites, 55 million SKUs and features 80 of the largest 100 U.S. web retailers – more than any other technology company. Only Adobe’s analysis spans large, medium and small retailers across over 50 merchandise categories, powered by Adobe Analytics and Magento Commerce, part of Adobe Experience Cloud, to provide the industry’s most accurate view of online shopping in the U.S.”

Chaikin Analytics will be rolling out a version “2.0” of its Power Gauge ETF rating that “will rate all ETFs, regardless of the type of ETF,” as long as they are “at least a year old,” according to Carlton Neel, the company’s CEO.

The company introduced the ETF rating about a year ago and is now “rating 460 of the most liquid equity U.S. ETFs, which represent about 96% of total assets in ETFs,” he told ThinkAdvisor. Fixed income ETFs are not included but will be added to the new version of the ETF rating, he pointed out.

The new version will be included in the upcoming, advisor-only PortfolioWise tool launching in 2020 that the company previously said will empower advisors to “construct and propose ETF-based portfolios that align with client risk.”
