AI… for Pizza?!

If you order a pizza from Domino’s, you might be getting it with a free side of AI. The pizza giant is determined to make big data and AI cornerstones of a company that has typically focused more on pizza stones. Now, Nvidia is highlighting how Domino’s is leveraging the power of data to deliver valuable insights in addition to pizza. Zack Fragoso, a data science and AI manager at Domino’s, explained how the company had grown its data science team exponentially – a move “driven by the impact [the team] had on translating analytics insights into action items for the business team.”

Domino’s made its first public foray into AI with “Points for Pie,” a Super Bowl ad stunt that allowed customers to send a smartphone picture of (any) pizza to Domino’s, earning points that could be used for free pizza. “No one was sure how to recognize purchases and award points,” Fragoso said. “The data science team said this is a great AI application, so we built a model that classified pizza images. The response was overwhelmingly positive. We got a lot of press and massive redemptions, so people were using it.”

FaceBook : What’s Next For AI : Solving Advanced Math Equations

Any high school student would guess there is a cosine involved when they see an integral of a sine. Regardless of whether the person understands the thought process behind these functions, it does the job for them.
This intuition behind calculus is rarely explored. Though Newton and Leibnitz developed advanced mathematics to solve real-world problems, today most of the schools teach differential equations through semantics.

The linguistic appeal of mathematics might get grades in high school, but in the world of research, this is hysterical.

However, the researchers at Facebook AI have picked this same semantic approach, flipped it over and built a model that would solve advanced mathematical equations.

Apple Aquires XNOR.AI

CloudQuant Thoughts : The big story of the week based on press articles is obviously the Apple purchase of Xnor.ai. They are know for a platform that makes it easier for developers to use artificial intelligence code and data in their applications. The suspicion is that Apple will use their smarts to improve SIRI.

Seattle AI startup drew interest from Amazon, Microsoft, Intel before selling to Apple

Apple wasn’t the only tech giant eyeing Xnor.ai. GeekWire broke the news on Wednesday that Apple acquired Seattle startup Xnor.ai, paying around $200 million for the three-year-old company that specializes in low-power, edge-based artificial intelligence tools.

Other large corporations were interested in the startup, too. Sources confirmed to GeekWire that Intel and Amazon had formal discussions with Xnor.ai. The Financial Times reported that Microsoft also approached the company. Xnor.ai has been moving its staff of roughly 70 employees out of the company’s offices in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, presumably to Apple’s Seattle facilities.

Apple Acquires Artificial Intelligence Company Xnor.ai

Apple Inc. acquired a Seattle-based artificial intelligence (AI) company Xnor.ai, to bring in more talent in a key area of technology.

The company, founded in 2016, had raised millions of dollars to build tools that help artificial intelligence algorithms to run on devices rather than remote data centres. In recent years, Apple has pushed to run this type of software on its devices to keep user information more private and speed up processing. According to the news, the company paid about $200 million for Xnor.ai.

Exclusive: Apple acquires Xnor.ai, edge AI spin-out from Paul Allen’s AI2, for price in $200M range

Apple has acquired Xnor.ai, a Seattle startup specializing in low-power, edge-based artificial intelligence tools, sources with knowledge of the deal told GeekWire.

The acquisition echoes Apple’s high-profile purchase of Seattle AI startup Turi in 2016. Speaking on condition of anonymity, sources said Apple paid an amount similar to what was paid for Turi, in the range of $200 million.

Xnor.ai didn’t immediately respond to our inquiries, while Apple emailed us its standard response on questions about acquisitions: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.” (The company sent the exact same response when we broke the Turi story.)

Best Permission Practices Sought for Data Collection in AI Research

AI researchers in healthcare are refining ways to ensure data they work with has been obtained with proper permissions, including from patients.

This becomes more challenging as smartphone apps asking for medical information become more popular, and consumers may click through agreement pages without of course reading the fine print.

Google for example has built its portfolio primarily on a 15-to-35-year-old consumer market, and now wants to consider targeting an older demographic. “Now they just want to go out to the retirement communities and start collecting data from residents to figure out how they can pitch their product to that demographic,” stated Camille Nebeker, an associate professor at the UC San Diego medical school, in a recent account in Bloomberg Law.

AI & Machine Learning Learning Path: A Definitive Guide

Artificial intelligence is currently one of the hottest buzzwords in tech — with good reason. In the last few years, we have seen several technologies previously in the realm of science fiction transform into reality. Experts look at artificial intelligence as a factor of production, that has the potential to introduce new sources of growth and change the way work is done across industries. In fact, AI technologies could increase labour productivity by 40% or more by 2035, according to a recent report by Accenture. This could double economic growth in 12 developed nations that continue to draw talented and experienced professionals to work in this field.

According to Gartner’s 2019 CIO Agenda survey, the percentage of organizations adopting AI jumped from four to 14% between 2018 and 2019. Given the benefits that AI and machine learning (ML) enable in business analysis, risk assessment, and R&D — and, the resulting cost-savings — AI implementation will continue to rise in 2020. However, many organizations that adopt AI and machine learning don’t fully understand these technologies. In fact, Forbes points out that 40% of the European companies claiming to be ‘AI startups’ don’t use the technology at all.

The music of the markets – Cuemacro

Feet tap. Hands clap. Heads shake. Music affects us. It moves us. By contrast, noise annoys us. Car horns beeping. Trains braking. Rain falling. It’s all sound. Yet it is obvious to discern the difference between music and noise. Music has intent, it has rhythm, it has pitch. Noise is an unwanted byproduct of our environment. Of course, we might have the opinion that certain music is little better than noise.

Markets are full of noise. In practice, in financial markets the noise overwhelms the signal, the music of the markets, which traders are seeking to hear. It’s all too easy to overfit a model that is simply taking an imprint of the noise to calibrate it, rather than the signal. The result is a model which works well on in-sample data, essentially, the training set you’ve used to fit it. However, it performs poorly on out-of-sample data.

In a sense, it’s like trying to compose music, without using a scale, and instead combining random frequencies, in the hope of producing a masterpiece. Yes, it may well end up sounding like music, but more often than not, such a composition will seem atonal. If we go to the other extreme and underfit our market model, it’s the equivalent of composing a song with a single monotonous tone.

Contextual blindness is one major risk that IT teams dealing with huge volumes of data are either unaware of or overlook, assuming it to be “the nature of their work.” Most IT teams use multiple tools for network analytics, which can cause the data obtained from these tools to have many missing links due to different formats or names for the same metrics. Baidu details its adversarial toolbox for testing robustness of AI models

No matter the claimed robustness of AI and machine learning systems in production, none are immune to adversarial attacks, or techniques that attempt to fool algorithms through malicious input. It’s been shown that generating even small perturbations on images can fool the best of classifiers with high probability. And that’s problematic considering the wide proliferation of the “AI as a service” business model, where companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Clarifai, and others have made systems that might be vulnerable to attack available to end users.

Researchers at tech giant Baidu propose a partial solution in a recent paper published on Arxiv.org: Advbox. They describe it as an open source toolbox for generating adversarial examples, and they say it’s able to fool models in frameworks like Facebook’s PyTorch and Caffe2, MxNet, Keras, Google’s TensorFlow, and Baidu’s own PaddlePaddle.

EOL of ETL?

ETL has been the industry standard for enterprise data management for several decades. Organizations rely on ETL processes to Extract data from relational databases, Transform it to a standard, consumable and business ready schema, and Load the data into another relational database sitting in the enterprise data warehouse. This creates a single source of truth for the enterprise, and a repeatable process for delivering updated data to the business for analytics and reporting.

The processes and infrastructure around enterprise data management, however, have fundamentally changed. No longer are organizations working with structured transactional data for quarterly or monthly reporting. The era of smartphones, IoT, AI and cloud computing has brought with it increasing volumes of diverse data, and strategic decisions are more and more driven by predictive insights rather than reporting on past performance. The demand for agile analytics and machine learning has organizations struggling to adapt legacy processes to this new paradigm. Is ETL to blame? Or does it just need a reboot?
